It’s easy to forget that our teeth rely on our gums to help them remain healthy in the long-term. Without good gum health, your teeth have no foundation and once your gums sustain a certain degree of damage and neglect, they can no longer support your teeth. This leads to tooth loss. Periodontal disease is a serious on-going gum infection that can not only irreversibly damage your gums, but the bone that supports your teeth.

Periodontal disease: why addressing it is vital

As we’ve mentioned above, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss, though the consequences can be even more severe. When tissue begins to break down, plaque can collect between the tooth and the gum, known as chronic periodontitis, which has been proven to increase risk of stroke and heart disease. It’s therefore, paramount that you take good care of your gums, which means preventative measures, like regularly seeing your hygienist.

It is recommended that patients attend 1-2 annual hygienist appointments every year, so we can keep an eye on any issues that develop and need addressing. Unfortunately, here in the UK, a third of adults admit to having never attended a hygienist appointment, which could explain the earlier statistic mentioned about tooth loss in over 40s. Regular hygienist appointments will dramatically reduce your chances of developing periodontal disease and heart complications. If you notice issues like bleeding gums whilst brushing, or you find you often have bad breath, this is a reason to make an appointment with us as soon as possible, to ensure any periodontal complications are treated.
